We want New Street Back!

This a letter that Connex have sent to a selected few local residents
However this crossing affects thousands of people daily

Connex, a private company, are using their weight to impact local community services.

On the day of the recent incident a Connex manager boasted that he had been trying to close these gates since 1980. The Connex manager then highlighted work had recently been stopped on the safety interlocking system they had been installing. No incident would have occurred if this safety system was in place. The responsibility for this incident must lie squarely with Connex management.
This was no accident.

Connex have submitted this change to the Heritage Listing of the New Street Gates so that they can be locked permenantly shut. This is their first step is closing New Street for good.
If you would like to object please write to:

Monday 10th September - Sandringham to City bound train hits gates
    - Fortunately no one injured
    - Surely this would not have occured is Connex had completed the install of a Safety interlocking system
    - Why didn't Connex install this saftety device in 2006 after the last incident
    - If  Connex' first priority is safety, then why do they delay installing additional safety

The safety operations of Connex must be questioned. Twice in the the last 18 months a train has hit the gates. The gates are 120 years old and have not previous had such a poor safety record.

Previous News Update - Some form of interlocking system is being put in place at the gates. Lets hope Connex are seeing the light that the Gates are safer than boom gates for motorists and with some minor development that can become safer to operate and run.

      • Multipe deaths at Geelong
      • Triple fatality at St Albans and Pedestrian death at St Albans
      • Multiple deaths at other crossings

    • Why does our government need to change the gates when they have other issues to fix in the rail system?
    • Why introduce the risk of fatalities that are seen at many other unmanned boom gates and pedestrian crossings?
